Lot description
Watercolour, 28,6 x 23,2 cm, vellum, titled in pen, numb. 63 in pencil in upper left corner (few spots, sl. browned and sm. stains on edges).
Good condition. Mounted on Japan paper on edges (part. cut), Japan paper mounted on cardboard.
A male and female Eurasian chaffinch. The male was used as a model for "A natural history of birds" (London, 1731-1738), vol. 1, pl. 63 (see biodiversitylibrary.org/bibliography/62897). The couple was used as a model for "A natural history of English song-birds" (London, 1737), pl. [6] (see biodiversitylibrary.org/bibliography/50850).
