Lot description
Red chalk, 16,4 x 13,1 cm, prepared laid paper, signed "Brouwer", few sketches in red chalk and Dutch ms. note in pen on verso (some foxing, hole).
Hinged at upper edges, under passe-partout.
Interesting drawing, probably inspired by 2 engravings by Coenraet Waumans (1619-1681) after Adriaen Brouwer (c. 1603-1638) (Rijksmuseum, inv. RP-P-OB-61.279, RP-P-1904-743). The inscription on the verso in a 17th-c. hand reads "bedroefde coninck dochter schoon / ach leonora die met tranen / comt doen een voetval voor den troon". This is not related to the drawing on the recto and suggests the sheet originates from a 17th-c. sketchbook.
