Lot description

Folio (occ. spotting and some normal toning).

18th-c. (?) half sheep, orig. blind-stamped calf over wooden boards, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, orig. brass claps with mod. leather strips, metal corner pieces (joints split, head and tail missing, boards rubbed).

1. Rariorum plantarum historia [...]. Antw., (J. Moretus I), 1601. [12]-364, cccxlviij-[11] pp. (ff. dd2 and dd5 missing, light dampst. in first quire, sm. green stain in marg. of quire PP, some soiling quire RR). Collecting descriptions of rare plants observed in various countries (Spain, Italy, Hungary), along with additions describing new plants. Also included are "Commentariolum de Fungis", the first important treatise on fungi, and part of Clusius' botanical correspondence. Ill. with an engr. title and more than 1110 woodcuts in-text. - 2. Exoticorum libri decem [...]. Leiden, (Raphelengii), 1605. [20]-378-[10-52-[40]-242-[1] pp. Major work on non-European plants and animals (i.a. from Asia and South Africa) and follow-up volume to "Rariorum plantarum historia" (1601) containing further works not published in the former. Some plant names are also given in Arabic. Ill. with an engr. title, woodcut mark on part title and c. 275 woodcuts (96 non-botanical, mostly animals). - 3. Curae posteriores, seu Plurimarum non ante cognitarum [...]. Ibid., 1611. [6]-71-[1 bl.]-24 pp. (edges of last ff. frayed, sm. hole in bl. marg. of last f.). L'Écluse's last work, published posthumously, containing corrections and additions to earlier works. Ill. with an engr. title and numerous in-text woodcuts.
