17th-c. vellum, flat spine with gilt label (soiled, bibliographical note on front endleaf).
Second edition of this famous work describing the horrifying tortures inflicted on Catholics by Calvinists in England under the reigns of Henri VIII and Elisabeth I, by Huguenots in France and by Protestants in the Netherlands. Illustrated with a vignette on title and 29 large copperplates depicting the cruelty of their endured agony: burned feet, hangings, drownings... and with the famous beheading of Mary Stuart. These plates, accompagnied by some verses and a commentary ascribed to Bocchius, are problably made by H. Wiericx. The 1st issue was published in 1587.
