Lot description

8vo: 165 (= 167)-[1 bl.] pp. (toned and stained).

19th-c. dark green morocco, covers with large gilt central coat-of-arms and triple gilt ruled border, gilt flat spine with red label, gilt sides, gilt inside dentelles, a.e.g., decorative endpapers, blue silk marker (corners sl. def.).

Reprint of pt. 2 of “Lettre mystique touchant la conspiration derniere [...]” (1602), a pamphlet on the conspiracy of Charles de Gontout, duc de Biron (1562-1602) against Henri IV, and on the part of the Jesuits in this case. Gontout was educated as a Calvinist, then turned to Spain, opposed Henri IV, and was executed for treason in 1602. Jean Boucher (1550-1644) was a French theologian and opponent of Henri III and Henri IV. He fled to Spain when Henri IV entered Paris, but later returned to Tournai. No title-page. Ref.
