Lot description

Folio, 2 parts in 1 vol.: [12 incl. title, frontispiece, portrait and coat of arms]-240-[2], [4]-308-[4] pp. 1st part: 4 pls, 2nd part: 34 (of 44) pls (pl. p. 207 detached, marg. tear in pl. p. 159, marg. stains, plan of Batavia bound after p. 194).

Cont. calf, gilt-stamped spine on raised bands (rebacked, original backstrip preserved, a few scratches).

Rare first edition of the fascinating account of travelling in the Dutch colonies in Southeast Asia and in South America by Nieuhoff (1618-1672), who explored Brazil from 1640 to 1649 and resided in Batavia from 1667 to 1670. The first part with 4 pls, incl. 1 map of Brazil, and 9 in text, contains a history of Brazil from its first discovery by the Portuguese, both lay and ecclesiastical. This classic work on Dutch Brazil, which is now becoming rare, is bound together with Nieuhoff's voyage to the East Indies when he joined the service of the Dutch East India Company. This second part consists of 43 pls incl. a map of Esperanza and 2 city plans of Pellacata and of Batavia, engr. of towns and villages, local people, botanical species and four very fine engr. pls depicting fish, the so-called "Visch-prenten". Ref. Tiele 199. - Sabin 55278. - Bibliographia Brasiliana II-101. - Landwehr VOC 282. Prov. Maredsous Abbey (bookplate).
