Lot description
Large folio: [4 incl. title]-47-[1] pp. with 2 preliminary and trailing blanks; 24 pls (pl. 5 bound before the title, pls. 14 to 18 bound in reverse sequence, a few small spots on the blanks).
Cont. red calf, gilt ruled and blind-stamped boards, gilt orn. spine with 5 raised bands, a.e.g. (weak joints, rubbed corners).
Complete with 24 aquatinted and handcol. plates, with descriptions of each plate in English and French, after drawings by the German-Italian orientalist artist Luigi Mayer (1755-1803). Mayer was the most accurate artist making drawings of the Near East before David Roberts. Includes colourful views of Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Bethany, and representations of biblical places: the pool of Bethesda, the fountain of Siloam, the sepulchre of the Judges of Israel, the tomb of Absalom, etc. Ref.
