Lot description
Folio: [34]-722-[4]-623-[1 bl.]-195-[1 bl.] pp. (sl. toned, occ. minor marg. soiling).
Contemp. overl. vellum, flat spine titled in ink, red edges. Very good copy.
Best and greatly enlarged ed. of the first comprehensive bibliography of anonymous and pseudonymous literature by the German scholar Placcius (1642-1699), 1st publ. 1674. With a chapter "De scriptoribus rabbinicis", listing numerous Hebrew titles. Beautiful allegorical engr. frontispiece showing how the learned author, standing in an academic library, takes the masks from the faces of several authors and attaches them to a cord. The cord with the masks refers to "Zettelkasten" to which single slips of paper with textual quotations could be flexibly attached, facilitating sorting and storing of text. Title in red and black. Text printed in 2 col.
