Lot description
Folio: 200 pl. (old repairs on front., pl. 154 and 171, some pl. cleaned, marg. spotting).
Contemp. calf over marbled boards, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands.
A finely engr., large atlas with 200 engr. of mainly Greek, Etruscan and Roman art. Winckelmann (1717-1768) was a German art historian, archaeologist and pioneering Hellenist who first articulated the difference between Greek, Greco-Roman and Roman art. The "unpublished" pl. are coins, statues, cameos, etc. that have never been reproduced on pl. before, or were misrepresented or unexplained. No title issued as far as we know. Without the text vol.
Ref. Brunet V:1462.
