Lot description

114 issues in 19 vol., 8vo (n.c., occ. min. worming, soiling or browning).

Contemp. vellum, flat spines titled in ink (a few with loosening bookblocks, sl. soiled). Good set.

Rare and large collection of the Dutch transl. of D. Fassman's weekly magazine "Gespräche in dem Reiche derer Todten" (Leipzig, 1718-1739), one of the longest-running Dutch magazines in the 18th c. Our collection consists of 19 vol., each containing 6 issues/months, totalling 114 issues, each with its own title and engr. frontispiece depicting the 2 historical persons fictitiously dialoguing in the issue. We have: July-Dec. 1722; July 1723-Dec. 1724 (3 vol.); Jan.-Dec. 1726 (2 vol.); July 1728-Dec. 1729 (3 vol.); Jan.-June 1731; Jan.-Dec. 1732 (2 vol.); July-Dec. 1733; Jan.-Dec. 1736 (2 vol.); July-Dec. 1737; Jan.-Dec. 1739 (2 vol.); July-Dec. 1740. Comparable to Lucian's "Dialogues of the Dead", though informative instead of satirical, these issues deal with the political history and biographies told by i.a. Mazarin & Richelieu, Sixtus V & Molière, Seven Wise Men from Greece & a jester, Philip II of Spain & William of Orange, Henry VIII & Sultan Suleiman, Attila & Tamerlane, Alexander the Great & Charlemagne, Mary Tudor & Mary Stuart, Johan Georg von Brandenburg & Prince Maurice of Orange, Augustus & Socrates, and many German Prince-Electors. From July 1736, also included is the "Staat-Nieuws" (state announcements) for the major European nations incl. the Ottoman Empire, giving information on interesting contemp. events, and also the monthly catch of Dutch Greenland whalers.
