Second ed. (1st 1710) by the Italian humanist Maffei (1675-1755) on the virtues of societal meritocracy presented in the guise of a treatise on duelling and chivalry. Maffei destroyed the quarrelsome and antisocial mentality of the class to which he himself belonged and proposed a new and different morality, built on the civic virtues of the ancients.
