Expanded, and much richer edition of the 1612 Florilegium novum by Matthaeus Merian's father-in-law incorporating the original 70 plates of de Bry and augmented with a rendering of the Frankfurt merchant Johannes Schwindt's famed garden on Eschenheimer Gasse. Our copy ill. with an allegorical title, fold. engr. view of the garden of John Schwinden in Frankfurt, 30 pl. illustrating parterres, urns of flowers, gardening tools and plants drawn from "De florum cultura" by Giovanni Battista Ferrari (publ. Rome 1633), and 136 engr. pl. of which some fold. showing engraved plans of garden design and a Wunderkammer of plant species. This work is a real celebration of horticulture providing a visual representation of contemporary European exotic, rare and fragrant plants from the New and Old worlds. There is no explanatory text beyond brief Latin captions. This Wunderkammer shows a great variety of plants: tulips, lilies, narcissi, irises, anemones, roses, sunflowers, cacti, peppers and a yucca. Copies with a full suite of plates are seldom to be found. The final plate depicts a rose which flowered in Prague August 1647.
