Lot description

8vo: xvi-488 pp.

Later half roan, gilt orn. spine on 4 raised bands, red shagreen boards (sl. rubbed). Good copy.

Fourth and last life-time edition (first 1764) of the first major work of the philosopher Thomas Reid (1710-1796), a central figure of the Scottish Enlightenment. This important work marks the starting point of Reid's philosophical perspective which sees common sense as the source of all philosophical knowledge, disagreeing with Hume’s scepticism and Berkeley’s solipsism. Reid's ideas formed the basis of the Scottish School of Common Sense. Ref. BL - COPAC.
