Contemp. half shagreen, marbled paper on covers, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, top edge gilt (some very sl. rubbing). Uncut copy.
First edition of the first Belgian Antarctic Expedition of 1897-99 with the "Belgica" led by the Belgian officer in the Belgian Royal Navy Adrien de Gerlache (1866-1934). The "Belgica" becoming the first boat to winter in the ice and bringing back essential scientific data for the knowledge of these regions. In 1905, 1907 and 1909, Gerlache led 3 expeditions of the Duke of Orleans to the North Pole. Ill. with 2 fold. maps and numerous b/w ill. in-text. With an extra map "Voyage arctique de Mgr Le Duc d'Orléans. Itinéraire de la Belgica, 1905". Signed by A. de Gerlache.
