8vo: [30]-176 [of 178]-[1] pp. (typographic title [?] and f. D8 missing, engr. title and last f. mounted, tiny wormtrack in blank margin of 2nd half mostly expertly repaired; some minor soiling).
Mod. brown leather "à l'antique", covers with gilt-ruled border frame, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands. Still a good copy.
Very rare first edition of this popular emblem book by the Jesuit A. Poirters (1605-1674), which sold out in 2 months. A 2nd ed. was printed the same year. Engr. ill.: front. and 16 large emblems by Ph. de Mallery, derived from Typus Mundi (1627). This work was only publ. a few times under this title, but many times later republ. as "Het masker van de wereldt afghetrocken". Emblems on pp. 6 & 14 with motto & epigram on mounted printed slips of paper.
