Lot description

Oval plaque painted on porcelain, 13,5 x 10,5 cm, signed "Sophie Liénard", ms. hallmark "Rihouet/ m. de porcelaine/ 7 rue de la Paix" on the verso.

Original gilt metal frame with glass. Excellent condition.

The king of the French, represented in bust, three-quarters on the right, is inspired with a certain liberty by the full-length portrait painted by Franz-Xaver Winterhalter in 1839 and kept at the Palace of Versailles. Sophie Liénard, née Girard (1800-1875), was a renowned miniaturist painter working on porcelain, based in Paris. She exhibited at the Salon from 1842 to 1847. She made numerous portraits of members of royal and noble families, as well as historical figures. She worked for a long time for the Rihouet factory, supplier of King Louis Philippe, 7, rue de la Paix in Paris. Her husband Justin Liénard, also a portraitist, worked for the Sèvres factory.
