Lot description

4to: [6]-205-[2] pp. (half-title missing, some foxing throughout, some minor soiling).

19th-c. red morocco signed Thompson in Brussels, large gilt fillets and rolls dentelle on boards, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, large gilt inner dent., a.e.g. (sl. faded spine, used corners). Nice copy.

Reprint with a new title of the 1682-ed. (1st ed. 1607) of the collection of emblems by Vaenius (1556-1629) on themes in Horace's poetry. Each emblem has a French motto and a 6-line French poem below, opposite Latin quotations from classical authors, an Italian 8-line poem, a Dutch motto and a Dutch 8-line poem. The Dutch and French poems are new. Engr. ill.: author's portrait by N. de Larmessin and 103 emblems. Title printed in red and black and ornated with a woodcut portrait of Horatius.
