[Dutch school]

BAKHUIZEN, Ludolf

Seascape with Dutch navy ship and fisher's vessel near the wharf of a walled city.

1673

€ 1.500 / 2.000

Lot description

Pen and brown ink, grey wash, 22,5 x 39,8 cm (visible), laid paper, signed and dated "L. Backh. / 1673" (few spots, very sm. hole, sl. browned at upper edge).

Under passe-partout and gilt frame (not studied outside frame). Good condition.

Excellent example of a large and skillful maritime drawing from the Dutch Golden Age. Drawn by Ludolf Bakhuizen (1630-1708) shortly after Willem van de Velde I and II left for England in 1672, when Bakhuizen became the leading marine painter in the Netherlands. Convincingly signed in pen at bottom left with one of his signature variations. The characteristic style and composition are in line with the many sea views by his hand, see for example in Amsterdam (Rijksmuseum, inv. RP-T-1961-65), London (British Museum, inv. 1836,0811.23), Windsor (Royal Collection, inv. 906276).
Ref. Not in Hofstede de Groot, De Beer.
