Lot description
Etching, 53,8 x 39,1 cm, laid paper, signed at bottom left: "Annibal. Carache jnvent." and right: "Audran sculp. Cum Privil. Regis", French title and Latin and French text in lower margin (few sm. light stains, traces of former mount on verso).
Hinged at upper edges, under passe-partout. Good, later impression with wide margins.
Classic theme of the disguised Achilles giving away his true identity by choosing weapons from a set of gifts. Etched by Gérard Audran (1640-1703) after Annibale Carracci (1560-1609). Dedicated to a namesake of the subject: Achille III de Harlay (1639-1712), first president of the Paris parliament.
