Lot description

Drawing, pencil, sepia, 10,6 x 8,1 cm, laid paper, unsigned.

Excellent condition.

The anonymous draughtsman was influenced by Rembrandt (1606-1669), who played a major role in the popularity and spread of this type of imagery. See for examples the paintings in New York (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, inv. 20.155.2) and The Kremer Collection.
Prov. Albert Van Loock (1917-2011), Belgian art dealer (stamp, L. 3751).
Joined: 1. Wijck, Thomas - The blind man bumping a pillar (from the story of Lazarillo de Tormes). 17th c. Etching, 13,1 x 11,7 cm, wove paper, signed at bottom left: "TW." (trimmed on platemark). Good, later impression. Mounted on paper at corners. Ref. Hollstein LV.86-87.11.III (of III). - 2. Van Ostade, Adriaen (after) - The woman spinning. 17th c. Etching, 12,2 x 17,0 cm, laid paper (trimmed on platemark, blue ink on verso sl. visible on recto at bottom centre, traces of former mount on verso). Copy in reverse after Adriaen van Ostade (cf. Hollstein XV.39-40.31). Ref. Not in Hollstein. (3 pcs)
