Lot description
Drawing, black chalk, heightened with white, framing line in black ink, 27,0 x 19,9 cm, laid paper, ms. note in pen at bottom: "H(ee)r Theodorus Justinus Rheen Schilder / na Roomen vertrokken in de Maend Augustus / van den Jare 1722 met het schip De Concorde" (few traces of former mount on verso).
Excellent condition.
Self-portrait of the Dutch portrait painter Theodorus Justinus Rheen (died 1745) at a young age. The inscription identifies the sitter and mentions he left for Rome in August 1722 with the ship The Concord. The drawing was possibly a gift to a family member or friend before his departure. Later in his life Rheen travelled to Batavia (Jakarta, Indonesia), where he worked and died. Several portraits by Rheen are in prominent collections such as Amsterdam (Rijksmuseum, inv. SK-A-3777, SK-A-3778) and Rotterdam (Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, inv. 10572-A).
Prov. Albert Van Loock (1917-2011), Belgian art dealer (stamp, L. 3751).
