Lot description
Etching, 52,9 x 71,0 cm, laid paper, signed at bottom right: "I. W. Baumgartner del. / Ios. et Ioa. Klauber Cath. Sc. et exc. Aug. Vind.", Latin text in upper and lower margin (trimmed inside platemark, light foxing).
In gilt frame (not studied outside frame).
According to a popular story, Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519) got lost in the mountains during a chamois hunt at the "Martinswand" in Tyrol. After a few days an angel showed him the way back home. Large etching after a design by Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner (1709-1761), who lets the landscape converge with an ornamental Rococo frame.
Prov. Iweins d'Eeckhoutte, Castle of Roborst (label and stamp).
