8vo: viii-308 pp.; 5 pl. (fold. map fragile and with tears in folds, left margin torn off but joined).

Contemp. green cloth, flat spine. Uncut copy.

First edition by the medical doctor and colonial administrator in East Africa S.L. Hinde (1863-1930). Hinde was involved in the Congo-Arab War in the service of King Leopold II of Belgium. Illustrated with 1 folding map of a part of the South Eastern Congo-Basin showing recent exploration, 2 full-page maps and 2 portraits of Hinde and commandant Dhanis. Report of the struggle in Central Africa between the conflicting forces of the East represented by the Arabs from Zanzibar and of the West represented by the Europeans from the mouth of Congo. The Belgians of the Congo Free State started in 1892 a campaign to divert the commerce of the interior to the Congo mouth and ultimately to Europe. Hinde was involved in this campaign in service of King Leopold II of Belgium with the rank as captain. The conflict resulted in the victory of Leopold's "Force Publique" and the obliteration of the slave-traders in 1894.
