Lot description
Copperplate, 21,8 x 35,7 cm, signed on verso: "AASa" (few light spots, top right corner sl. bent).
Plate for a nice unknown copy of a print by Johannes Sadeler (ca. 1550-1600) after Peter de Witte's (ca. 1546-1628) painting (cf. Hollstein XXI.114.206). An impression of the original print is in Amsterdam (Rijksmuseum, inv. RP-P-OB-7881). Our copy is slightly smaller without the floor at bottom. The signature and numerous testing lines of the burin on the verso suggest this might be a practice plate by the young Aegidius Sadeler II (1568-1629) after his uncle Johannes.
Ref. Not in Nagler, Hollstein.
