8vo; 20 pl. protected by tissue guards (rare foxing).
Publisher's binding: red cloth, boards with frames of fillets and angular fleurons, flat spine with roll-stamps and title in gilt (slightly soiled, some stains).
First edition illustrated with 20 hand-coloured lithographed plates, partly heightened with gum arabic, and with a black title vignette. The catalogue belonging to Sclater comprises about 4.100 specimens of which 2.170 species of passeres, fissirostres and scansores. The English lawyer and zoologist Sclater (1829-1913) identified the main zoogeographic regions of the world and was the Secretary of the Zoological Society of London for 42 years.
