Lot description

Set of 18 etchings, 8,3 x 18,9 cm except title 8,7 x 18,7 cm (trimmed to plate-mark, glued on paper with many large dark brown spots esp. on n. 1-10, sm. lacks to edges esp. on n. 4, 6, 7).

Contemp. red morocco, gilt fillet on boards, gilt-tooled spine with flat bands (corners and joints sl. rubbed).

Complete set in 2nd state (with mention "published by Israël", rhymes [by abbot de Marolles ?] & numbers added). One of the most famous sets of Callot, denouncing the horrors of war and the life of the soldiers who where enlisted against a miserable pay, as well as their excesses (robbery, rape, killings), their death on battlefield or abandoned along roads, their punishment (pyre, hanging, torment of the wheel, etc.) or their reward by the prince.
