2 parts en 1 vol., 8vo: engr. title-147-[1 bl.], 213-[1] pp. (sl. damp stain to upper corners in begin., foxing, sm. hole in text of p. 101 and stains on p. 199 of 2nd part).
Contemp. cardboard, flat spine (rubbed, joints split and reinforced).
1st ed. of the famous pamphlet by Mirabeau (1749-1791). Engr. title with portrait of Jan de Witt. "It was under the influence of a number of Dutch exiles that Mirabeau [...] composed his "Aux Bataves" […] This highly intriguing text was meant to incite the Dutch to take up arms against the restored Orangist regime, but also clearly served a function in the French political debate. With this early numeration of the rights of man, it was a direct precursor of the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen of 1789" (Velema, "Republicans", 2007, pp. 20-21).
