Lot description

8vo: [32]-736 pp. (paper age-toned).

Contemp. marbled calf, richly gilt spine with raised bands, red edges (sl. rubbed, old bibliographical notes on flylvs). Very good copy.

4th ed. of "one of the earliest attempts at a wide-ranging annotated bibliography, with remarks about the rarity of each book and its nature, first published in 1732 and here grown to nearly four times the original 206 pages. Vogt (1695-1764) based his bibliography mainly on catalogues of private libraries and intended it for scholars as well as book dealers. It was ahead of its time in listing all the books in one alphabetical sequence, and gives explicit references to copies in earlier catalogues, sometimes with prices […]. Said to be the best known and most successful of all eighteenth-century German bibliographical compilations of rare books, it is a forerunner of Brunet and Graesse and still provides useful information" (Asher). Engr. vignette on a3r.
