Lot description

4to: [8]-241 (= 243)-[1] pp. (toned, somewhat short).

18th-c. sheep, gilt flat spine, red edges, marbl. endpapers, green silk marker (rubbed, corners bumped, front joint def., head and tail def.). Good copy.

Rare early monograph on the life and thought of the scholastic philosopher Pierre Abélard (1079-1142), famous for his love affair with Heloisa (here pp. 46-56 “Abailardi & Heloissae familiaritas”). The erudite Spanish Cistercian Caramuel Lobkowitz (1606-1682), a foremost anti-Jansenist, was active at Bruges. He describes the conflict between the Cistercian Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) and Abélard, arguing that St Bernard brought the "heretic" Abélard back to the true faith. Ref. STCV 12910492. - Willaert 2265. - Cp. Palau 43536 (1639 ed.). - Not in BL. Prov. Ownership entry on title crossed out.
