Lot description

Amsterdam, Nicolaes Visscher II, ca. 1680

Engraving, 40,7 x 52,0 cm, laid paper, signed in the plate at bottom left: "Abraham Bloemaert inventor" and centre: "CJVisscher Excu.", in lower margin: "DUM DORMIUNT HOMINES INIMICUS ZIZANIA INTERSERIT TRITICO. Math. 13. 24.", with four columns of Dutch text below (small stains, horizontal crease at centre and frayed upper and lower edges strengthened).

Copy in reverse after the engraving by Jacob Matham after Abraham Bloemaert, dated 1605. Bucolic landscape with the parable of the weeds as described in Matthew 13:24-29 and 36-40. While the farmers are sleeping at right, the devil is sowing weeds among the wheat at left.
