4to: [16]-853-[1-2 bl.] pp. (stain in gutter & blank bottom corner 1st quire, sm. wormtrack in blank margin of quires *-G).
Old calf, double gilt ruled border on covers, gilt spine on 4 raised bands, a.e.g. (rep. at tail, some sm. scratches & min. stains). Good copy.
Very rare 1st Plantin ed. (2nd 1582) of a voluminous apology of Christianity, dealing with Creation, Providence and the immortality of the soul, written by the leading Protestant theologian Philippe de Mornay, seigneur Du Plessis-Marly (1549-1623). Mornay's influence became so great he got called the "Huguenot pope". Through personal contact he might have persuaded Plantin to publish this work, when he was in Antwerp as follower of the Duke of Anjou. Woodcut initials. Woodcut mark on title. Ref.
