6 (of 7) instalments, 4to or folio: 30, [4], [4], [4], [4], [4] pp., 66 (of 67) pictures on 58 pl. (lacking 7th instalment and 1 pl. ("La poésie") in 2nd instalment; text sl. fox., margins generally dusty).
Bound in 1 vol., brown shagreen signed Birdsall & Son Southampton, gilt rules and roll-stamps on covers, gilt orn. spine on 5 raised bands (sl. rubbed), gilt top. Good copy, mounted on stubs.
Very rare work published between 1853-1855. Contains 66 (12, 13/14, 10, 11, 10, 10) salted paper prints from paper negatives by Delessert (1817-1868), pasted on 58 sheets carrying a brief caption and a numeric reference to Bartsch. This process was developed by William Henry Fox Talbot in the early 1840s. "Popular until roughly 1860, early paper prints were made on high-quality writing paper, which gave the prints a matte surface with visible paper texture" (Khan Academy, on line). Ref.
