Half green shagreen, paper boards, spine with 5 raised bands. Good copy.

Travelogue through West Africa comprising parts of the modern countries of Mali, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Liberia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria, Gabon, and Sierra Leone in 1856-59. Du Chaillu (1831-1903) was involved in various commercial ventures involving the killing of 2000 birds and 1000 quadrupeds and stuffing and sending their skeletons back to the United States. Lots of descriptions of flora, fauna, and peoples he encountered. Ill. with 27 full-page engr., including a fold. front. with "first image ever of a gorilla", 46 reproductions in-text and 25 pp. of advertising.
