5 vol., 4to; 20 pl. (occ. foxing in vol. II & V, marg. soiling to pp. 393 & 697 of vol. I and to some ff. in vol. III, marg. damp stain in begin. of vol. V).
Contemp. mottled calf, gilt orn. spines with raised bands, spr. edges (sl. rubbed, some lacks of leather to heads & tails, sm. stains).
First edition of this translation by the Jesuit Joseph-Nicolas Charenton of the chronicle of Spain from the biblical times until the 16th century. Illustrated (complete) with 4 fold. maps, 16 numismatics plates and 1 armorial headpiece to dedication. The first edition in Latin was published in 1592, the 1st Spanish in 1601 and many French translations were published from 1694. The Jesuit historian Mariana (1536-1624) was a member of the Monarchomachs.
