Lot description

Drawing, charcoal, white and grey wash, 24,5 x 37,4 cm, wove paper, signed at lower margin (creases and stains in the margin, not affecting the image).

Édouard Duval de Beaulieu (1789-1873) was a Belgian Lieutenant-General and a member of a renowned Belgian family with members at key positions in the political world of the early 19th century. At the age of fifteen he joined the French Grand Armée and participated on many military campaigns in Poland, Russia and Spain. As an amateur artist he documented his military travels. The drawing was made at the time when Duval de Beaulieu was on a campaign to Poland and Prussia, and was addressed to Madame Duval de Gognier on the 25th of November 1807.
Joined: Collection of 14 drawings. Dutch and French schools, 18th-19th c. Various techniques and conditions. Landscapes, figure studies, sketches, a drawing with old attribution to Morillo, a pounced workshop drawing in the manner of Cornelis Dusart or Adriaen Van Ostade and one "penwerck" drawing by Antoon Overlaet (after Teniers), dated 1772.
