Personnalities: Sebald Justinus Brugmans (1763-1819), botanist and physician; Peeter Driessen; Jeronimo de Vries (1776-1853), man of letters and numismatist; Johannes Immerzeel Jr. (1776-1841), author and poet; Samuel Masson (d. ca. 1742), publicist; Jonas Daniel Meijer (1780-1834), the first Jewish lawyer in the Netherlands; Petrus Nieuwland (1722-1795), pastor; Jacobus Scheltema (1767-1835), lawyer and amateur historian; Jacobus Albertus Uilkens (1772-1825), first professor of Land Management and Technology in Groningen; Jan van 's Gravenweert (1790-1870), writer and lawyer; Jan Hendrik van Kinsbergen (1735-1819), Count of Doggersbank, naval officer; Pieter Vrede; Everwijn Wassenbergh (1742-1826), Dutch-language specialist.
