Lot description

1. From E. Collignon to his uncle Joseph. Bertrix, 1870. He gives him some news of his family and states that they are ready to help the French army. With an interesting listing of food prices. Written on the verso of an issue of the "Dépêche-ballon. Journal des Événements du siège". - 2. From "Henry" to Adèle Hattevielle. Lille, 1871? He reassures her that he, and his beasts, are safe and sound after the bombing from Saturday and that he has enough food supplies. Prov. [Collection Gabrielle Max, i.e. Gabrielle Tournay, who published a poetry "La petite cigale" in 1899" (?)].
During the Siege of Paris, the balloons were used to transport mail because the telegraph lines were cut and messengers captured, shot or turned back by the Prussians. Circa 66 balloons were released from Paris to communicate with the outside world.
