Lot description

1786-1822

Drawing, black chalk, heightened with white, 18,4 x 24,3 cm, laid paper, unsigned (brown stains at upper section, tiny tear at lower margin).

Hinged by upper edge to paper mount.

Jan Hulswit (1766-1822) was specialised in landscape drawings, which he was able to sell as individual artworks on the market. His landscapes were in the collection of Louis Napoleon. The Dutch king William I used one of his drawings as a diplomatic gift to the king of Prussia. The present sheet shows great affinity with a landscape in the Rijksmuseum collection (RP-T-FM-63), particularly in the typical rendering of the trees with short miniature strokes.
