Lot description

Engraving, 37 x 18 cm (some toning, 1 corner def., sm. tear in bottom margin, upper part dampstained). Good copy.

Illustration by the Leuven artist Berterham (d. 1735) of the golden key made by N. Rombout, granted in the name of Charles III of Spain to Leuven on account of its resistance to the French in 1713. The key was stolen by the French in 1793 and returned by P.P.C. Lammens in 1816.

Joined: Id. - Allegorical engraving, [Brussels, J.B. Berterham for] Petrus vande Putten, [end of 17th c.]. Ca. 35 x 23,5 cm. Showing the silver spade used to start the construction of a canal from Brussels to Ostend. Good copy (toned). Plans for the Canal had been made in the 1650s by Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, but were only partly realized in the 1690s by the Viceroy of the Spanish Netherlands, Maximilian II Emanuel Elector of Bavaria (1662-1726). The project, however, was soon left unfinished. The plate i.a. shows a ship entering the harbour of Ostend, as well as the arms of the Nine Provinces. Ref. Not in Muller "Historieplaten". (2 pcs)
