Sketch of a northern landscape with the entrance of a cave (?) at the lower right. Van Swanevelt (1603-1655) was one of the main Dutch landscape painters to introduce the Italian landscape tradition in the north after his long stay in Rome (1629-41). After his stay in Rome he was employed in Paris by Richelieu and Louis XIV; there he became a member of the "Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture".
