Half contemp. provisory mottled sheep, marbled paper on covers, spines with raised bands and labels (worn). Untrimmed copy.
First French translation by J. Van Effen and A.-F. Prévost (orig. 1723-1731) of this richly illustrated history of (the medals of) the Dutch Revolt by the Catholic historian G. van Loon (1683-1758). Engr. ill.: front. by B. Bernarts after J. Goeree, full-page portrait by J. Houbraken after F. van Mieris, 5 title-vign., 5 headpieces (i.a. by J. Goeree showing the coat of arms of the dedicatee Eugene de Savoye, others signed by D. Coster or Fr. van Bleyswyck), 1 folding pl. showing coins, full-page pl. and more than 1000 ill. in-text. Titles in red and black. Text for the larger part in 2 col. Van Loon has been inspired for this impressive work by the famous "Recueil historique des médailles frappées sous le règne de Louis XIV".
