Lot description
Etching, 27,5 x 33 cm, laid paper with Vienna watermark of 1600 (comparable to Heawood 3186), signed in the plate "Petrus Breugel fec: Roma 1553" (tiny cut in lower left corner, several brown stains in upper sky section).
Under passe-partout and frame (not studied outside frame).
River landscape with Daedalus and Icarus at top centre, a river winding from foreground into distance around a large hill, several large ships on river. From a series (of 4) mythological river landscapes after Bruegel. Published posthumously in Prague after a landscape drawing made by Bruegel during his journey to Italy. This series was traditionally thought to be by Cornelis Cort or even Joris Hoefnagel, but was re-attributed to Simon Novellanus by Hans Mielke in 1979.
