The raising of Lazarus.

Drawing, black chalk, black and grey wash, heightened with white, 37,5 x 30,5 cm, laid paper with watermark (foolscap, Heawood:1974), unsigned (lower right corner and left edge professionally restored with Japan paper, oxidation of lead white on verso, several creases).

A beautiful rendering of the raising of Lazarus, much inspired by Rembrandt's compositions on the same theme. The drawing can tentatively be attributed to Moses Ter Borch (1645-1667), who often reprised Rembrandt compositions such as is shown in several sheets at the Rijksmuseum collection such as "Moses on Mount Sinaï" (RP-T-1897-A-3352).
