Lot description

Drawing, pen and black ink with grey and white wash, 25 x 17,6 cm, laid paper with watermark, unsigned, attribution "Lesueur" on mount (mounted on blue paper, min. brown stains).

The burial of an elderly man by two young men, overlooked by an older man with a turban. Most likely an Old Testament scene. Attributed on verso to the French artist Eustache Lesueur (1617-1655), known for his neo-classical religious paintings. He was one of the founding members of the French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1648.

Red chalk, 21,2 x 33 cm, laid paper with watermark (foolscap), unsigned (frayed around the edges, with some sm. tears and creases). - 2. The suicide of Socrates (?). France, 18th c. Black ink and grey and black wash, 38,4 x 28,5 cm, laid paper with watermark (fleur-de-lis), unsigned (brown spot at priest's head to the upper right, some creases, horiz. centerfold). - 3.The meeting between a young girl and an elderly woman in a garden. France or Holland, 18th c. Pen and black ink, grey wash, 26,5 x 21 cm, laid paper with watermark (Pro Patria), unsigned (some stains and creases). - 4. The vision of Constantine. France, 18th c. Grey and white wash, 35,5 x 23 cm, blue/grey laid paper (tear with upper right corner missing, several sm. tears and creases along the left edge, squaring grid in black chalk). (5 pcs)
