Contemp. mottled calf, gilt orn. spines with 5 raised bands (joints sl. rubbed), red leather title labels, red edges, marbled endpapers. Very nice set.
First French 4to-edition of "Travels in Poland, Sweden and Denmark" (London, 1784) of the English traveller and historian William Coxe (1747-1828). Ill. (complete) with 19 engr. pl.: 5 fold. maps (Poland, Russia, Caspian Sea, Sweden, Denmark), 7 fold. plans (Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, the Vishnei-Voloshok Canal, Stockholm, the Trollhätte Canal, Copenhagen & Kiel Canal), 4 portr. (Stanislas II Augustus of Poland, Catherine II, Pugachev & Gustav III of Sweden) and 3 other pl. (birds, Cyrillic writing and costumes). The work mainly concerns Russia; the part on Norway was written by the Swiss P.-H. Mallet (1730-1807), former Professor of French linguistics & literature in Denmark.
