2 vol., lge 8vo; 37 pl. protected with tissue guards (spotting throughout, extensive on some ff., 1 pl. detached in vol. II).

Contemp. three-quarter red shagreen, boards of red paper gilt ruled, gilt orn. spine with raised bands (rubbed).

Second edition of this travel account in form of letters of two voyages made by the Prince Soltykov in Sri Lanka and mainly in India during the years 1841-1843 and 1845-1846. Illustrated with a map of India with the routes in colour and 36 lithographs on tinted background, after the author's drawings, representing the village of Gatiganawa, the festival of the moon at Kandy (Esala Perahera), Sinhalese people, "voyage en poste dans les plaines du Pandjabe", Kanaour Valley in Himalaya, the sides of the Ganges near Calcutta, processions, etc. The traveller and artist Soltykov (1806-1859), grandson of Prince Nikolay Soltykov, received the nickname of "The Indian" from the Russian and French aristocracy after these two voyages.
