Lot description
2 parts in 1 vol., folio: [4]-236-[18], 349-[15] ff. (sl. browning, 2 sm. wormholes in the text of the 2nd part from f. 204, marg. foxing and soiling, light dampstaining on first and last ff., sl. trimmed, occ. ms. annot.).
17th-c. blind stamped vellum, covers with central oval floral ornament within double ruled border, spine with raised bands (front cover loose, lower cover loosening, some stains and soiling).
Rather rare Vascosan re-edition of this universal history by Paolo Giovio (1483-1553), bishop of Nocera (1st ed.: Florence, 1550-1552). His work begins in 1494, during a very tempestuous period in Italy with the invasion of French king Charles VIII and the conquest of Naples, and ends in 1547. The layout of this book, typical of Vascosan's production, distinguishes itself for its quality, with a balance of whites and blacks and the use of very fine Renaissance woodcuts.
