6 vol., 4to (some min. spotting and offsetting; vol. 1: pl. 19 missing, first quire sl. loosening; vol. 2: tear in pl. 9; vol. 3: pl. 1 missing, pl. 32 present two times; vol. 4: pl. 6, 12 and 19; vol. 5: pl. 5, 7, 9, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 and 25 missing; vol. 6: pl. 1, 2, 9, 11, 13, 14, 19, 23, 26, 32, 33 and 38).

Green embossed and gilt decor. publ. cloth by J.V. van den Heuvel, flat gilt-decor. spines (corners and sides sl. rubbed).

First edition. Ill. with 6 lithogr. titles and 188 (on 213) lithogr. pl. (mostly in colour).

Contemp. half brown shagreen with corners, cloth on covers, gilt orn. flat spine, decor. endpapers, marbled edges. First edition of the refutation by Wensing of the legend around Pope Joan. According to the legend, a woman reigned as pope for a couple of years during the Middle Ages. This theory was still defended in 1843 by the Leiden professor N.C.
