Lot description

16mo: 126-[2] pp. (upper margin of p. 19 cut a bit short, marg. damp stains).

19th-c. calf, gilt decorated spine and covers.

3rd Latin ed. of Aneau’s pocket emblem book (1st ed.: 1552). With woodcut title device, colophon within cartouche, 105 engr. emblems attributed to Pierre Eskrich, alias Pierre Vase, and not by the engraver of the previous editions Bernard Salomon. The humanist B. Aneau (1510-1561) played a major role in the development of Lyon's emblem literature and was reponsible for the 2nd French translation of Alciato’s Latin emblems. He depended heavily upon classical sources, resulting in nearly half the emblems being based on woodcuts for Ovid’s Metamorphoses. With a very early illustration of tennis on p. 79, followed by the Latin poem, "Magnus Labor Cassus" ("Great Labour in Vain").
Ref. Landwehr (Romanic) 116. - BnF. - Brunet III:737. - Baudrier III 170. - Adams 1092.
