Lot description
18 parts in 8 vol., folio (n.c., browning, some spotting and foxing, a sm. worm track in vol. I).
Contemp. mottled calf, covers with blind-ruled frame, gilt ornam. spine with raised bands and labels, spinkled edges (turn-ins part. missing, some labels splitting, some corners, spines and joints bumped, covers with some scratches).
Impressive compilation of European treatises and deeds in French, Latin, German, Dutch or Spanish, from the time of Charlemagne till the 18th c., stopping respectively in 1358, 1436, 1500, 1555, 1630, 1666, 1700 and 1730. Each volume consists of 2 or 3 parts, each with its chronological table. Ill. with woodcut head- and tail-pieces, in-text depicting seals or royal cyphers. Vol. I ill. with a very fine engr. frontispiece and an engr. device showing a rural scene, both by B. Picart (dated 1726), an engr. plate figuring the temple of Janus, and 7 engr. in-text depicting antique coins. Titles printed in red and black.
